Stainless Steel Tanks

Stainless steel vertical water storage tanks

Vertical stainless steel water storage tanks from Texas Metal Tanks, from 90 to 3,750 gallons. Stainless steel is low-carbon steel with added chromium, which forms a corrosion-resistant layer, so the tank holds up where plain steel would rust.

Choose by capacity, then by material: the same Texas Metal Tanks sizes come in galvanized steel and as rainwater collection tanks. For larger volumes, see corrugated steel water tanks. The stainless steel storage tanks guide explains steel grades and uses.

Guides for Stainless Steel Tanks

How to choose a stainless steel tank

  1. Name the liquid first. Stainless steel storage tanks hold water, petroleum and chemicals. The tanks in this group are sold as vertical water storage tanks, so they are built for water; for fuel or chemical storage, the stainless steel storage tanks guide covers the other stainless options.
  2. Pick the capacity. Sizes step from 90, 140 and 200 gallons through 500, 830 and 1,000 gallons up to 2,500, 3,200 and 3,750 gallons, all from Texas Metal Tanks. Choose the size first, then check that the footprint fits your site.
  3. Weigh the other steels. The steel storage tank guide lists corrugated, bolted, galvanized and stainless tanks for above ground or underground use. Compare stainless with galvanized steel water tanks, corrugated steel water tanks and bolted steel tanks before you settle on one.

Stainless steel tank questions

Can a stainless steel tank hold drinking water? Stainless steel tanks for above ground use are equipped for potable water as well as non-potable water and fuel. Before you store drinking water, confirm the tank you choose is rated for potable use, and check what your local code or inspector requires for the system.

Does a stainless steel tank rust? It resists rust and corrosion. The chromium in the steel forms a protective layer, and a cleaning and passivation process removes contaminants and restores that surface. The result holds up to water, chlorine, acids and other chemicals.

Can stainless steel tanks store rainwater? Yes. Steel water tanks are used for rainwater collection and fire protection as well as for potable and non-potable water storage. If the rainwater is meant for drinking, the same potable rating and local code checks apply as for any drinking water tank.

Which stainless steel grade is used for storage tanks? Stainless storage tanks are made from grades such as 304, 304L and 316. Higher-alloyed grades add resistance to fire and heat, which suits challenging environments and chemical storage.
