Vertical Water Storage Tanks

Upright poly tanks for water, from 22 to 15,500 gallons

A vertical tank stores more water in less floor space by building upward, so it fits tight yards, corners and indoor rooms, and its height lets water flow out by gravity. Ours are one-piece, UV-stabilized polyethylene tanks from Enduraplas, Norwesco, Chem-Tainer, Peabody Engineering and Custom Roto-Molding, from 22 to 15,500 gallons.

Two things decide the choice: capacity (your daily use and how long a reserve you want to hold) and whether the water is for drinking. For drinking water, pick a tank rated for potable use, such as the Peabody ProChem potable tanks with bulkhead fittings. Other tanks suit irrigation, livestock and washdown.

Choosing a vertical water tank

Vertical or horizontal?

Vertical and horizontal tanks hold the same water in very different shapes. A vertical tank stands upright on a compact base, and its height feeds gravity lines. A horizontal tank lies low and wide, which suits transport, low-clearance spaces and installs where a spread-out base matters more than floor space; see horizontal leg tanks. Choose vertical when you have:

  • A tight footprint: limited floor space but room to build upward.
  • A gravity feed: you want flow at the outlet without adding a pump.
  • Steady storage: the tank will sit on a fixed, level pad for the long term.

Flat, cone or open top

Most tanks here are flat-bottom tanks that sit directly on a level pad and drain through a side or bottom fitting. If your process must drain completely, a cone bottom tank slopes to a center outlet and sits on a stand. For easy filling, hand mixing and access from above, see open top tanks.

Features

  • UV-stabilized polyethylene holds up to sun and weather outdoors without cracking or fading. Dark tanks block sunlight and help prevent algae growth.
  • Seamless one-piece molding leaves no seams or joints to fail.
  • Rust-free: unlike steel, poly will not rust, so upkeep stays low.
  • A range of capacities and fittings to match your volume and connect to your plumbing.

Where vertical tanks are used

  • Homes and cabins: main or backup water supply where floor space is limited.
  • Farms and ranches: livestock water, sprayer fill and irrigation supply.
  • Commercial and industrial: process water, cooling water, washdown and buffer storage between deliveries.
  • Rainwater collection: upright storage that captures roof runoff in a small footprint.
  • Emergency and off-grid: stored water for outages, fire protection and remote sites.

How to choose

  • Capacity: size from your daily use and the reserve you want to keep. Our guide What Size Water Tank Do I Need? walks through the math.
  • Footprint and height: measure the pad and any clearance, like doorways or ceilings, before you commit to an upright profile.
  • Water use: confirm the tank is rated for potable water if you need drinking water; tanks without that rating still work well for irrigation and washdown.
  • Fittings: match the inlet and outlet size and placement to your plumbing so the install stays simple.

Vertical water tank questions

What is the most common water tank size? For household and small-farm use, 1000 gallons is the size chosen most often: big enough for a real reserve, small enough to site and refill easily. Commercial buyers more often land at 5000 gallons and up. The water tank capacities page compares the common sizes.

How heavy is a full vertical tank, and what base does it need? Water weighs about 8.34 pounds per gallon, so a full 1000 gallon tank holds roughly 8,340 pounds of water and needs a level, compacted pad. At 2500 gallons the water weighs about 20,850 pounds and calls for an engineered pad with the ground bearing checked; at 5000 gallons it is about 41,700 pounds and needs an engineered pad or ring wall.

What is the largest vertical water storage tank? The largest here is the 15,500 gallon Norwesco vertical water storage tank, with Norwesco 10,000, 11,000 and 12,000 gallon models below it. For a larger reserve, look at metal water tanks or pillow tanks, which go into the hundreds of thousands of gallons.

Is there a shorter vertical tank for low clearance? Some sizes come in more than one profile. Custom Roto-Molding makes the 1600 gallon tank as a standard and a Short Vertical Storage Tank, and Peabody ProChem potable tanks in 1000 and 1500 gallons come in 64 and 73 inch diameters. A wider tank of the same capacity stands lower.

Does a tank hold exactly its listed gallons? Not always. Usable capacity can differ from the geometric volume because of wall thickness, fittings, freeboard, manufacturer tolerances and internal parts. The tank volume calculator estimates total capacity from a tank's dimensions and the volume at a given fill depth.

How often should a vertical water tank be cleaned? Inspect the inside at least once a year and let its condition set the schedule. Clean and disinfect when you see sediment or growth, after a positive coliform test or a repair, at seasonal startup, or when the water's taste or odor changes.
